Introducing WAHA

As you may have read today in the Portland Tribune, or on, today the organization unveiled the Winterhawks Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA).

This is an enormous undertaking for the Winterhawks. Last summer the team ran one hockey camp. This year, that figure is eight for the on-ice camps, plus another seven (with more to come) of the floor hockey camps.

We’re hitting all corners of the city, all ages from 7 to 18, and all levels of hockey experience.

It’s an unprecedented commitment to expose kids to hockey, and in time, develop players at a grassroots level. From a cost standpoint, playing hockey can be cost-prohibitive, and some kids never get exposed to the sport for that reason alone.

WAHA wants to break down that barrier as much as possible. As a registered charity, the team will be holding regular fundraisers, with money being poured back into the system help with the cost of ice time, equipment, lessons, etc.

Of course, that’s all in the future. For now, we’re just hoping to put a stick in the hands of as many kids as possible this summer. With the free floor hockey camps, kids will learn all the basic rules and skills and get a few hours on skates at one of the local rinks.

With the on-ice camps, kids who already play will get top-notch instruction from a number of local coaches, including Winterhawks assistant Kyle Gustafson, along with his brother Derek, a goalie who spent time in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild. These camps are very reasonably priced, and you can sign up online right here.

This undertaking has even caught the eye of a prominent alumnus who’s expressed an interest in getting involved, and we hope to have more information on that in the coming weeks.

In addition, we’ll soon be releasing details on the first WAHA fundraiser, a great event that will give you the opportunity to rub elbows with some Winterhawk and Buckaroo legends.

It’s an incredible program, so stay tuned for more information about how you can get involved.
