Pouliot’s on board

As we announced earlier today, Derrick Pouliot, whom the Winterhawks took with the top overall pick in last month’s bantam draft, has officially signed on the dotted line with Portland.

This is a terrific development for the Winterhawks and their fans. Nevermind having another talented player in the fold, it also shows that the perception of the team is starting to change.

In recent years as the team struggled on and off the ice,  there have been some issues when it came to signing players. Some didn’t come at all, others had to take weeks or months to deliberate.

And while everyone’s situation is different, and each player and their family has to evaluate what’s best for them, there had been no hesitation or doubt from the Pouliot family that Derrick would sign with the Winterhawks.

Now that he has, it’ll be a busy summer for Derrick. As noted in the release, he’ll be taking part in the week-long prospects camp in Calgary next month, then will join the team for training camp in August, and he may play in the preseason tournament up in Everett.

I can’t imagine being able to handle that kind of schedule at the age of 14. When I was 14, I gave a passing thought to getting a summer job, but quickly tossed it aside and spent the summer playing Super Mario Kart instead.

At any rate, it’s exciting to start considering the possibilites for this team in the near future. Consider the team’s last three first round draft picks:

-Brad Ross stepped in as a 16 year-old this season, played 61 games and was named Rookie of the Year with nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points. Most impressively, he didn’t shy away from the physical side of the game, finishing second on the team in penalty minutes with 119.

-Ty Rattie got his feet wet as a 15 year-old last season, and will be expected to contribute in his first full season next year. As Andy noted last week, he’s already listed as a potential top-five pick in the 2011 NHL Entry draft.

-Now we add Pouliot to the mix, who as a defenseman last season ranked second on his team and sixth in his league in scoring. He can move the puck as well as anyone at his age and seems like he could give the Winterhawks an elite quarterback for their power play.

While you don’t want to put undue pressure on these kids, the talent is starting to pile up.

Note to season ticket holders: Either later this week or next week you’ll be getting your renewal package in the mail, featuring a 12-page booklet looking back at last season, ahead to next season, and talking about some changes happening for the 2009-10 season.

You’ll also be contacted soon after the books go out by a member of our customer service staff to walk you through any questions or concerns you might have.

We have lots of exciting programs you can take part in next season (how does all you can eat concessions food sound?), and we’ll make sure you know what all your options are.

All you can eat concession food?
No thanks (the vision in my head is MC Pizza), would prefer that beer be a dollar or two cheaper though.
