Offseason? What offseason? It may be June but for many of the Winterhawks, next season starts now.

The Winterhawks braintrust (of which I’m shockingly not a part) is descending upon Calgary today as they get set to begin the annual prospects camp.

Ty Rattie, Tyler Wotherspoon and top draft pick Derrick Pouliot will be among the players looking to make an early impression over the next few days. Andy Kemper will be on hand for a few of the sessions and you can check out his blog later this week for some updates from Calgary.

Ty Rattie is one of the players taking part in this weekend's prospect camp.

As management watches the young guys while enjoying Canada’s culinary delights (Shreddies, Timbits and Coffee Crisp) a few of the team’s veterans are back in Portland right now doing some training.

Brett Ponich, Tayler Jordan and Riley Boychuk are taking part in some power skating classes with current Buffalo Sabre Paul Gaustad as they look to get a jump on the 2009-10 season. I’m hoping to get in touch with at least one of them over the next couple of days for an interview, so keep an eye on winterhawks.com for that.

In addition, training camp is just over eight weeks away, as players have to report on August 22, with the first on-ice sessions coming a day later.

It’s only June, but next season is underway.
