The Case For Matt Duchene

For months, the storyline surrounding tonight’s NHL Draft has boiled down to one question: Tavares or Hedman?

The Islanders hold the number one overall pick, and the consensus has been that they’re deciding between high-scoring star John Tavares from the OHL, or cornerstone defenseman Victor Hedman from Sweden.

But all of a sudden, rumors are circulating that another OHL player, Matt Duchene, could be in the running for the top pick. And to that I say, bravo.

L-R: Duchene, Tavares, Hedman

Sure, he’s got great stats. But the reason I’m all in favor of the number one pick being used on Duchene is simple: how can you not like a guy who’s trying to single-handedly bring back the short-sleeved dress shirt?

Over the years, the short-sleeved dress shirt has been derided and mocked, disrespected and disowned. Like Matt Duchene, I too have had enough.

The short-sleeved dress shirt has a storied history, a sartorial selection shown off by some of society’s biggest stars. To wit:

Dwight Schrute can't pulverize his own kidney stones, but he can rock the short sleeved dress shirt.

Detective Sipowicz solved numerous cases over the years, but never the one of why the short sleeved dress shirt went out of style.

Fashion trends come and go, but real men know the short-sleeved dress shirt is a timeless classic.

So stand tall, Matt Duchene. You’re joining a long history of proud men who have bared their forearms in defiance of society’s mockery.

Don’t let them change you.
