The Draft inches closer

All paeans about Duchene’s duds aside, the terrific theater that is the NHL Entry Draft is mere hours away.

The Winterhawks are hoping to get back on the draft board after not having any players taken last year, just the second time in franchise history (along with the 2001 Draft) that Portland did not have any players taken.

The best bet to get selected is defenseman Brett Ponich, who goes into the draft as Central Scouting’s 151st-ranked North American skater, the only Winterhawk to crack the list. In his second full WHL season, Ponich was one of just two Winterhawks to play all 72 games (along with Colin Reddin), and he increased his scoring by 15 points, and improved his plus/minus by 20.

Along with Ponich, depending on who you talk to there may be one or two other Winterhawks names called as well.

There are plenty of other storylines to follow. Will it be John Tavares or Victor Hedman going number 1 to the Islanders? Or will the rumors prove true and see New York shock everyone and take Duchene number one? Who will be the first WHL player taken? Will Jared Cowen’s knee injury cause his stock to fall?

You can catch all the drama beginning in mere hours at 4 p.m. on Versus, where they’ll show the first round tonight. Tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. the draft resumes with rounds 2 – 7, broadcast live on the NHL Network.
