The Hawks’ Nest

Weekend recap

Repeat after me: It’s only the preseason…it’s only the preseason….it’s only the preseason.

No, the games don’t count. And yes, all WHL teams are missing key players with NHL camps underway, making blanket judgments this early essentially pointless. But, still…not a bad weekend for the Hawks in Everett.

Three games…three wins. And the offense was rolling. Portland had 15 goals in the three games, 16 if you include the goal allotted for the shootout win. By comparison, it took the first 12 regular season games last season for Portland to hit 15 goals. What’s most impressive is that this wasn’t one or two guys who got hot over the weekend- 11 different players accounted for the 15 regulation goals.

And the shots…150 over three games, including 62 against Prince George. Their goalie faced more rubber than a Goodyear assembly line worker.

Now for the bad news: injuries. Seth Swenson missed some action, but he was just under the weather and will be fine. Ty Rattie on the other hand has a broken thumb. He’ll see a doctor about the injury in the coming days, but he’s out for at least a couple of weeks. Adam Basford has a high ankle sprain, and he’s week to week. The most serious injury came to defenseman Kyle Madsen, who suffered a serious knee injury. He has an MRI scheduled for later this week to determine the extent of the damage, but he’s expected to miss at least three months.

Berglund definitely seems to be the REAL deal! Looking forward to seeing what the team, as a whole, can do together. Doesn’t seem like we’ll have scoring problems. Our defense is young (though very active) and hopefully they can continue their success in a 72 game regular season to keep the pressure off our goalies. So in the meantime, it’s only pre-season…it’s only pre-season…it’s only pre-season.
